Over £50m now allocated to Self-Help Housing Organisations

Following the final announcement, in July, of the 2nd Round of DCLG Empty Homes Community Grants Programme funding, it means that over £50m has now been allocated to 110 largely community led self-help housing organations throughout England. Nearly £30m was allocated in Round 1 during 2012 and a further £30m+ has been alocated in Round 2.
“This represents a huge step forward for many of these organisations” said Jon Fitzmaurice. ” until the advent of this programme government funding for housing was pretty much restricted, via the HCA, to a small number of large housing providers. This has opened up the field to small local organisations and made it posible to secure funding to lease or acquire empty street properties – which is very similar how many housing associations started out”.
